In 1586 Sir Francis Drake arrived in Havana, Cuba with the intent to loot the city. Though this didn't happen he did take away something from the trip: Some of Drake's crew had became sick with dysentery & scurvy, prompting a small group to venture ashore in search of a local remedy. They returned with a potent tonic made from aguarediente de cana, mint leaves, and the juices of sugar cane plus limes, which proved to be highly effective against their ailments. The drink is still popular today, though for much different reasons!
